lpé is a hardwood from South America and undoubtedly the number one option for decking. Known to last for 50 years, lpé is extremely weather resistant, significantly harder, has superior bending strength, and has superb resistance to insects and decay. When oiled and maintained, its natural gorgeous golden brown colour can darken to a deep reddish mahogany colour. Ipé can also be left to sun exposure without losing structural integrity and will gradually fade leaving a silvery grey patina.

Generally speaking, Cumaru is lighter in colour than Ipé and varies from yellow-brown to reddish brown, and with a grain that is more flamed. Similar to Ipé, Cumaru can last 50 years with its superb durability and weathering properties, as well as resistance to termites and other dry-wood borers. Unlike other exotic species, Cumaru does not emit tannin which tend to produce stains near swimming pools.

Garapa is an exotic hardwood that is naturally resistant to rot, decay and insect attack. Similar to Ipé and Cumaru, Garapa is naturally scratch resistant which allows the surface to remain smooth for many years, making Garapa a perfect wood for exterior decking. When a lighter colour is preferred, Garapa’s light golden honey colour is iridescent when cut and matures to a rich brownish colour over time making it a great alternative to Ipé or Cumaru. Garapa offers a 30 year lifespan with very low maintenance and is offered at a lower price point than Ipé and Cumaru.
